Please help the SMLC with its prize in Translation, honouring former student Keren Brody.

The School of Modern Languages and Cultures would like to create a commemorative prize for the highest mark in the final-year French translation paper (which involves translation both into and out of French) to remember Keren Brody who died in a car crash a few months after graduating in 2018 with a first-class honours degree in French Studies. In order to make this an annual prize, we're looking for donations to cover the award of a cash prize for the next 5 years in the first instance.

Keren's story

Keren was an excellent student who connected with everyone she met. She was intellectually curious, critically minded and always willing to speak up. She was an amazing, self-assured young woman who effortlessly combined maturity and good humour. As well as studying for her degree, she worked part-time at Curiositea on campus, which she loved. She also enjoyed sporting activities and socialising (often involving Korean food).  She was active in various societies, including the French department’s Franco-débat team, which went on to win the U.K. Francophone debating final in 2018. In her debating performances, just as in everyday conversation, she was full of zest and quick humour, a true reflection of her infectious character. She was a hugely talented linguist, and in her final year, Keren was determined to pursue a career as an interpreter and was full of enthusiasm for the future. Colleagues who taught her and mentored her are grateful to have known such a vibrant and gifted young woman and feel that a prize for performance in translation is a fitting commemoration for someone who loved French so much, and who made such a lasting impact on the department and those around her.

Where will the money go?

The money will go towards the student in their final-year who achieves the highest mark in the translation paper, involving both French-English and English-French translation. We would like to keep this award going for 5 years in the first instance, as we believe it is a wonderful way to recognise the achievements of those about to graduate and the hard work they put in to achieve, whilst truly commemorating our colleague and friend, Keren, who consistently demonstrated her love for French and her constant drive and motivation.
